Confess Sins for the Spirit to Flow
In the Bible the Spirit is presented as living, flowing water. Jeremiah 2:13 poetically presents a picture of two evil doings in turning away from this water. “My people have committed two evils: / They have forsaken Me, / The fountain of living waters, / To hew out for themselves cisterns, / Broken cisterns, / Which hold no water.”
The first evil is to turn away from the Lord as our unique source of satisfaction and supply. The second evil is to look to our own, man-made source of satisfaction, the satisfaction of the things of the world. Any source of satisfaction other than Christ, the very God, is a broken cistern that will always leave us perpetually dissatisfied. First, we need to repent by returning to the Lord as our unique source of satisfaction. Then we need to confess our sins, our “broken cisterns” which we have tried. This confession will dig away the dirt from our inner being, and the Spirit as the living water will gush up within us.*
First John 1:9 assures us, “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” But our confession should not be merely Lord, I sinned or Lord, I failed. Our confession should be in more detail, opening ourselves until we have the Lord’s peace. And when we confess one thing the Lord might touch us about another. Let us respond to Him! Then we will be refreshed.
Now is the time for confession. Revelation 20 tells us that the devil, the source of sin, and death, the result of sin, will have been cast into the lake of fire. Thus, in New Jerusalem sin will not exist.
