Bless This House, O Lord
“Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever.” 2 Samuel 7:29 NKJV
Have you ever hosted a house blessing?
It’s a gift you can give to your family and friends, whenever there’s a move to a new location. Even if you’ve lived in a place several years, it’s not too late to ask God to bless your home.
When I bought my first house as a single woman, God placed it on my heart to invite my pastor over to lead a time of prayer for my friends and family in a blessing at my new home. I don’t remember what he said except that his prayer was beautiful, and we celebrated this gift from the Lord with party refreshments!
After marriage, my beloved husband and I have moved several times to other homes, as have our parents and adult children, and we’ve taken the house blessing to each one. Along the way, I found a church blessing service and modified it for a home, with Bible verses to read aloud together (shared below).* We have even conducted some of our house blessings online on our computers!

Does your home really need a blessing? No commandments specifically call for it. But there is a precedent in the Old Testament for asking God to provide His goodness and presence to households.
Jabez implored God to bless him, enlarge his home and influence, keep His hand with him, and preserve him from evil so he would not cause pain (1 Chronicles 4:10). In 1 Chronicles 13:14, the house where the ark of the covenant temporarily resided was blessed by God’s presence. And Proverbs 3:33 declared that God would bless the home of the just.
When you ask for blessings, you’re requesting that He dwell with you…with His protection, joy, harmony, favor, provision, and guidance over those who live within it.
This is not some sort of talisman prayer to keep all harm away. Houses fall apart. Our “blessed” houses have endured lots of curious “attacks,” including a bat infestation, a woman driving her car into our dining room, tornadoes, basement flooding, gas leaks, frozen pipes, hornets, and more!
But our homes have been happy…with laughter, games, hard work, play, worship, good food, celebrations, Bible studies, parties, and mostly, peace. God has given us a solid roof over our heads during nearly four decades, and He allowed us to raise a family that still communicates with each other. I’d call that the biggest blessing from God by far.
Will God bless your home if you hold a prayer time? That’s up to Him. He is sovereign over everything, including the structures He provides for us and all that happens within them. Our responsibility lies in obedience to His word and living every day for His glory, not ours.
Whether your home is a million-dollar mansion, a ramshackle cabin, or a houseboat, it belongs to God. We’re simply acknowledging it’s Him, asking for His help to make it a safe, happy place to live.
If there’s a move coming up for you or your loved ones, plan for a time of sweet celebration that includes a blessing. Remind those present that your new residence is consecrated to God and that you are dedicating yourselves to serve Him there. Then open the doors wide to invite more to join you. Let your hospitality be abundant, unburdened by any inhibition. When a house is indeed blessed by the presence of God, you will find His irresistibly sweet fragrance and warmth for yourself and for welcoming others inside.
Lord God, Father of Lights, Giver of all good gifts, I ask You to bless my home by dwelling with me. With my family and friends, let me exalt You for what You have provided and offer my service to You within its walls. Give me safety, peace, and generosity to share my shelter with others. Let me come before You each day with thanksgiving for Your goodness and joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
