Bargaining with God: How God Uses Our Meager Vows
“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you” (Genesis 28:15 ESV)
Bargaining with God Amid Distress
We all tend to bargain with God at times.
“Lord, if you help me through this tough spot—fix this strained relationship, ease my money worries, lift this heavy load—then I’ll know I can step up my game, read the Bible more regularly, or get more involved at church.”
It’s part of being human. Our requests come from a vulnerable place. When we’re hurting or struggling, we seek immediate comfort and security to get through the day. We don’t always see further ahead; we focus on what we want or need NOW.
But God, in His great love and mercy, understands that side of us. He doesn’t ignore our half-hearted deals or turn us away. He meets us exactly where we are, in the middle of our struggles.
God’s Response to Jacob’s Vow
Consider the original “bargain hunter” Jacob in Genesis 28. After some questionable choices and family trouble, Jacob is a young man on the run. Out in the wilderness, sleeping on a rock, he makes his pitch: “God, if you give me food, clothes, protection, and a way back home safely, then you’ll be my God.”
What’s fascinating is how God responds. No lightning bolts, dismissal, or even criticism. Instead, in a powerful dream, He shows Jacob a ladder with angels ascending and descending—a bridge between Heaven and earth, a sign of His closeness.
God then renews the promise He made to Jacob’s grandfather, Abraham: countless descendants, the land as an inheritance, and blessings that would touch every nation. Then, more personally, He tells Jacob: “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you” (Genesis 28:15 ESV). God ends up fulfilling all these promises and more, even changing Jacob’s name, associated with “deceiver”, to Israel, a name that reflects his struggle with God.
How God Uses Our Bargains
God doesn’t want to just fulfill our immediate needs; He wants to draw us deeper into relationship with Him, to follow the path and the purpose He has chosen for us. And He’ll even use our meager bargains to show us how much more is in store!
God’s ways are often mysterious, yet full of kindness. Have you ever felt Him gently pulling you toward a deeper kind of faith and trust, beyond those quick “my way” fixes? We might show up with our own ideas, but He invites us to let go of our limited plans and embrace His heart and His plan for our work, our relationships, our sense of purpose, all woven into something eternal.
Rather than just answering with what we want, God shows us what we need, and what He has planned through it all. It’s a step-by-step process from conditional promises to genuine surrender.
In our vulnerable moments, He is at work. It’s not about our negotiations; it’s His steady presence that turns simple pleas into a stronger connection. He’s not just solving problems; He’s shaping us and drawing us nearer to Him.
