Are You a Mature Believer or a Babe in Christ? - Booty and Treasures fer All!

Growing Up in Christ as a Mature Believer… (1 Corinthians 2 6 & Hebrews 6 1-2) — In Hebrews 6, Paul challenges believers to grow beyond the basics of the faith and move toward maturity. He writes:

“Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.” (Hebrews 6:1–2)

Paul’s message here isn’t meant as a rebuke but as a call-up. He’s saying, “You’ve been born again—now grow up in the faith.” Just as a child eventually learns to stand, walk, and take on responsibility, a follower of Jesus is expected to build on the foundation of the gospel and become skilled in living out the truths of God’s Kingdom.

He lists six foundational truths — the “elementary teachings” — that every believer should know and understand:
1. Repentance from dead works – Turning away from self-reliance, sin, and rotten fruit.
2. Faith toward God – Learning to trust God’s Word, not human reasoning.
3. Instruction about washings (baptisms) – Understanding the different kinds of baptisms.
4. The laying on of hands – Recognizing spiritual impartation, commissioning, and healing.
5. The resurrection of the dead – Living with the certainty of life beyond this life.
6. Eternal judgment – Understanding that God’s justice is both certain and good.

Paul states these are the beginning steps of a believer. Mature believers build upon these truths to live fruitful, Spirit-led lives that reflect Christ’s character and power.

In this study we will explore each of these six foundations—not just as doctrines to know, but as realities to walk in. Spiritual maturity isn’t about how long we’ve been in church; it’s about how much of Jesus’ life and Spirit are being formed in us.
