People are fascinated by angels. When the subject of angels comes up, people lean in a little closer. They want to know: Are angels real? Are they active today? And perhaps one of the most common questions of all—are guardian angels biblical?

It’s a fair question. We’ve all heard the idea of a “guardian angel watching over.”

But are guardian angels in the Bible, or is that just something we’ve picked up from culture and folklore? In my recent conversation with Pastor Jack Graham on the Greg Laurie Show, I got his thoughts on the matter.

Angels Are Not a Fringe Topic in the Bible

Jack originally felt angels were a “fringe subject.” But when he began studying angels seriously, he discovered that there are over 300 references to angels in Scripture!

“ It is a mainline issue of the unseen world—the supernatural world—that is all around us,” Jack said.

From Genesis to Revelation, angels are present in Scripture.

So angels are real, active, and, as Jack said, they always point to Jesus.

Peter’s Potential Guardian Angel in Acts

There’s a fascinating moment in Acts 12.

Peter is thrown into prison, and the church is praying fervently for him. God sends an angel who miraculously frees Peter. Doors open, chains fall off, and Peter walks right out.

He goes to the house where believers are praying and knocks on the door. And when a woman named Rhoda recognizes his voice, she’s so excited that she forgets to open the door and runs back inside.

When she tells everyone Peter is outside, they say something very curious:

“‘You’re out of your mind!’ they said. When she insisted, they decided, ‘It must be his angel.’” (Acts 12:15 NLT).

I think that statement—“It must be his angel”— raises the question: Do we have guardian angels? When I raised this with Jack on the podcast, he said he believes so, although there are not many Bible verses on the matter. But he points out that Jesus spoke of a guardian angel with a child.

Children and Guardian Angels

“‘Beware that you don’t look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my heavenly Father’” (Matthew 18:10 NLT).

The wording here is significant. Jesus didn’t say angels in general—He said their angels. So it is possible children have guardian angels.

What the Bible Does and Doesn’t Say About Angels

If we’re asking if guardian angels are biblical, we should also take a look at what the Bible says about angels overall.

Jack was careful to clarify what Scripture does not teach. Children who die do not become angels, and people don’t transform into angels after death. Angels are a distinct creation of God, separate from humanity, created to serve Him and carry out His purposes.

And even if guardian angels do not exist, this much we do know: Angels are active in the life of the believer. The Bible says they protect us, “The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him. And delivers them” (Psalm 34:7 NKJV). They also minister to us (Hebrews 1:14) and escort us to glory.

I cannot say for certain that Christians have guardian angels, though some biblical passages may suggest this. But I can tell you that, if you are a believer, you have angels watching over you.
