A Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation
In the Old Testament there are many physical figures and shadows of the spiritual realities in the New Testament. To grasp the shadow is easy but to see the spiritual reality requires
divine revelation. We should pray with Paul (Eph. 1:17) that God “may give to you [to each of us] a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the full knowledge of Him.”
With our human mentality alone we cannot grasp the spiritual depths of what is revealed in the New Testament. Even the apostle John, a mature believer when he wrote Revelation, needed to be “in spirit” (1:10; 4:2; 17:3; 21:10) to see and understand what was shown to him.
Since the New Jerusalem is the wife o Christ, the Lamb, it is preposterous to say that the New Jerusalem is a material city…. It is one thing to have a mental understanding of this but quite another to have a spiritual realization and vision in our spirit. We need to pray for a spirit of wisdom and revelation so that the eyes of our heart would be enlightened to see His goal (Eph 1:17-18). We need to pray to be carried “away in spirit onto a great and high mountain” to see this bridal city, this “city-lady” (Rev. 21:10).*
We can each pray, Lord, carry me away in spirit to see and understand New Jerusalem.
